Windsor, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Dignity Act took effect on July 1, providing a safe and supportive environment, free from bullying on school property, a school bus or at a school function.
The Windsor Central School District is helping to create that environment for its students.
"We should stand up and speak out," said 5th grader Abriana Shoga.
Shoga calls herself an onlooker at C.R. Week Elementary School's bully prevention kick off. Planning for the program began last year.
Teachers, bus drivers, and administration were all trained to handle bullying situations.
"Students need to come to school to feel safe and comfortable so they can learn," said Principal Lisa Milano.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 6 out of 10 children witness bullying daily.
The Windsor District hopes to lower that number by working with students.
"They communicated that they had been bullied verbally, they've been bullied by exclusion, and some of them had been cyber bullied," said Milano.
The elementary students worked in groups, some even admitting to experiencing bullying first hand.
"That takes a lot of courage to admit that you've been bullied, and to admit that in front of your peers," said Milano.
Students and teachers will meet once a week in class meetings, allowing students a chance to discuss concerns together.
