Key Stats:

The company has now missed analyst estimates for the last four quarters. It fell short by 77 cents in the third quarter, by 90 cents in the second quarter, and by 81 cents in the first quarter.

Revenue has increased for four consecutive quarters. Revenue increased 2.3% to $1.81 billion in the third quarter. The figure rose 1.1% in the second quarter from the year earlier and climbed 2% in the first quarter from the year-ago quarter.

Looking Forward: The outlook for the company?s performance in the upcoming quarter is increasingly favorable. Over the past ninety days, the average estimate for the first quarter of the next fiscal year has risen from a loss 56 cents per share to a profit of 27 cents. Down from a loss of $2.53 per share ninety days ago, the average estimate for the fiscal year is now a loss of $3.20.

More Americans seeking dental treatment at the ER

CHICAGO (AP) ? More Americans are turning to the emergency room for routine dental problems ? a choice that often costs 10 times more than preventive care and offers far fewer treatment options than a dentist's office, according to an analysis of government data and dental research.

Most of those emergency visits involve trouble such as toothaches that could have been avoided with regular checkups but went untreated, in many cases because of a shortage of dentists, particularly those willing to treat Medicaid patients, the analysis said.

The number of ER visits nationwide for dental problems increased 16 percent from 2006 to 2009, and the report released Tuesday by the Pew Center on the States suggests the trend is continuing.

In Florida, for example, there were more than 115,000 ER dental visits in 2010, resulting in more than $88 million in charges. That included more than 40,000 Medicaid patients, a 40 percent increase from 2008.

Many ER dental visits involve the same patients seeking additional care. In Minnesota, nearly 20 percent of all dental-related ER visits are return trips, the analysis said.

That's because emergency rooms generally are not staffed by dentists. They can offer pain relief and medicine for infected gums but not much more for dental patients. And many patients are unable to find or afford follow-up treatment, so they end up back in the emergency room.

"Emergency rooms are really the canary in the coal mine. If people are showing up in the ER for dental care, then we've got big holes in the delivery of care," said Shelly Gehshan, director of Pew's children's dental campaign. "It's just like pouring money down a hole.

"It's the wrong service, in the wrong setting, at the wrong time," she said.

The center in Washington, D.C., is a division of the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.

Pew researchers analyzed hospital information from 24 states, data from the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and studies on dental care.

Not all states collect data on ER visits for dental care, but those that do reveal the trend, Gehshan said.

In 2009 alone:

? Fifty-six percent of Medicaid-enrolled children nationwide received no dental care.

? South Carolina ER visits for dental-related problems increased nearly 60 percent from four years earlier.

? Tennessee hospitals had more than 55,000 dental-related ER visits ? five times as many as for burns.

Using emergency rooms for dental treatment "is incredibly expensive and incredibly inefficient," said Dr. Frank Catalanotto, a professor at the University of Florida's College of Dentistry who reviewed the report.

Preventive dental care such as routine teeth cleaning can cost $50 to $100, versus $1,000 for emergency room treatment that may include painkillers for aching cavities and antibiotics from resulting infections, Catalanotto said.

These infections can be dangerous, especially in young children, who may develop fevers and dehydration from preventable dental conditions. In Florida, for example, 200 children were hospitalized in 2006 for those types of infections, he said.

The recession has contributed to the trend, Catalanotto added. When a family member loses a job, dental care may take a back seat to food and other necessities.

Part of the problem is low Medicaid fees for dentists. In Florida, only about 10 percent of dentists participate in the state Medicaid program, he said.

The numbers also are rising in hospitals in Illinois, where dentists have complained about low Medicaid reimbursements.

Pekin Hospital in the central Illinois town of Pekin has seen a significant increase in ER patients with "very poor dental health," said Cindy Justus, the hospital's ER nursing director. They include uninsured patients and drug abusers, and many are repeat patients.

"There's just not a lot of options" for them, Justus said.

Shortages of dentists, especially in rural areas, have contributed to the problem, Gehshan said.

She said the Pew center is working with states to develop training for dental hygienists and other non-dentists in treating cavities and other uncomplicated procedures. Other potential steps include increasing water fluoridation and use of dental sealants.

Putting plastic sealants on molars can prevent cavities, but "children at the lowest risk are most likely to get them. It needs to be the opposite," Gehshan said.

CERN researchers find flaw in faster-than-light measurement

Last year, scientists at CERN clocked neutrinos traveling faster than light, a speed widely regarded as physically impossible. Now they say the measurement might have been flawed.?

Researchers have found a flaw in the technical setup of an experiment that startled the science world last year by appearing to show particles traveling faster than light.

The problem may have affected measurements that clocked subatomic?neutrino?particles breaking what Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein considered the ultimate speed barrier.

Two separate issues were identified with the GPS system that was used to time the arrival of?neutrinos?at an underground lab in Italy, James Gillies, spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said Wednesday.

One could have caused the speed to be overestimated, the other could have caused it to be underestimated, he said.

"The bottom line is that we will not know until more measurements are done later this year," Gillies told The Associated Press.

The results of the experiment were received with great skepticism by scientists when they were published last September because they seemed to contradict Einstein's theory that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. That rule is fundamental to modern physics, and breaking it is seen as a step into the realms of science fiction where time travel and warp speed engines exist.

Even researchers involved in the experiment cautioned at the time that the measurements would need to be independently verified by other scientists before a genuine finding could be declared.

The experiment involved?neutrinos?being fired from CERN's site on the Swiss-French border to a vast underground laboratory 454 miles (730 kilometers) away at Gran Sasso in Italy.

Researchers found that the?neutrinos?appeared to arrive 60 nanoseconds sooner than if they had been traveling at light's speed of 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second).

The experiment's margin of error allowed for just 10 nanoseconds. A nanosecond is one-billionth of a second.

Roll Out the Barrel Aged Cocktail: Hands-On Innovation is Catching ...

For the cocktail geek, barrel-aged cocktails are one of the most interesting developments of the 21st century.
For the bar owner, barrel-aged cocktails are an opportunity to grab some hip cachet and pull in extra customers. And off-premise sellers should keep an eye on this trend, because pre-made versions are already available in bottles.

Barrel-aged cocktails are ?a big part of our business,? says Shawn Vergara, owner of Blackbird in San Francisco. ?We get a lot of people who like to come in and try these: industry people and cocktail enthusiasts.? Blackbird is a two-year-old bar in a city well known for its food and drinks scene. It serves no food, but the barrel-aged cocktail program put it on the map.

When a barrel-aged cocktail is good, it?s like nothing your best bartender can immediately whip up. The spirits have melded together over a period of weeks, yielding a seamlessly smooth drink. Depending on the type of wood used, it might also have interesting accents from the barrel.

Carin Galletta Oliver, president of the word-of-mouth marketing agency Ink Foundry, says having such cocktails as a signature item is a good way to impress. ?When consumers come into a restaurant and bar, they want something new and they want some sort of ?wow? experience,? says Oliver, whose clients include Outback Steakhouse and California Pizza Kitchen. ?A barrel-aged cocktail is something people want to go home and tell their friends about.?

However, there?s a reason barrel-aged cocktails are still found at only a few bars around the country: they take some investment, both in time and money. And if you find out after six weeks (or more) that you don?t like what you made, you have to either sell it anyway or, better, eat the losses. That?s why Jeffrey Morgenthaler, the bartender who imported the trend from London and now manages the bar at Clyde Common in Portland, says in an instructional video for Hudson Whiskey: ?Start small.?

A barrel-aged cocktail program like Blackbird?s can be elaborate: the bar does three or four cocktails at a time with different types of aging vessels. But even a single barrel-aged cocktail?perhaps a classic like a Manhattan or Negroni?can get attention.

You can try the concept by sampling High West?s ?36th Vote? Barreled Manhattan, made with the Utah distillery?s rye, sweet vermouth and bitters. It?s a steep $57, but it is delicious, with a softer profile and longer finish than you?d expect from a 74 proof drink. But if you?re in the bar business, you?re going to want to make your own.

Nick & Toni?s Caf? in Manhattan has been doing a barrel-aged Negroni for about a year. Assistant General Manager Richard Scoffier found inspiration on his honeymoon in the Finger Lakes, and uses Seneca Drums Gin as the base. ?It took a while to catch on last year,? he says, ?but then it sold out quickly at the end of the summer so we had a bit of a gap where we were out of it this fall. It?s a steady seller and I?m getting ready to put my third batch in the barrel now.? Promotion of the cocktail is low-key: ?When someone asks for a Negroni we tell them we?ve got a house version. Other people are just intrigued about the barrel aging and want to give it a shot.?

Getting on the Barrel Bandwagon

A few months ago, this story might have said, ?The first thing you need is the barrel.? Tuthilltown Spirits in New York, which makes Hudson Whiskey, is the main company selling the small new barrels used to make these drinks. A 5-liter barrel is $96 before shipping. You can and should use the barrel more than once, but it is a startup cost.

However, now there?s an even cheaper way. Blackbird has begun aging cocktails in glass barrels with oak staves, ironically the exact same way that the wine industry saves money on barrels.

?We wanted to offer a lower price,? Vergara says. ?A $10 cocktail moves a lot better than a $12 cocktail. If we can use products that allow us to keep the price down to $10, that helps.?

The ingredients list is important. Avoid anything that isn?t spirits-based, such as juices, because they can go cloudy or even spoil. Fortified wine products like Vermouth and Sherry will work, but avoid unfortified wines or beer. Vergara now avoids organic liquors, which may not have the same preservatives. ?We used one product that was organic, an organic cordial, and it fell out of the solution,? he recalls.

Consider using white liquors instead of those already aged in wood, so you avoid double-oaking. But before you reach for the vodka, consider this: the cocktail enthusiast tends to favor whiskey-based drinks. Solve this by using unaged ?white dog? whiskies.

Make sure to prime the barrel first by filling with water and draining. You can pour the ingredients right into the barrel and stir. There?s no set time for the cocktail to be ready. Morgenthaler suggests you begin tasting it after six weeks, and often after that until you like the results.

At that point it?s important to empty the barrel into a glass vessel so the cocktail won?t absorb any more wood. Morgenthaler suggests leaving some of it behind as an experiment, so you can see if you would have liked it a week or two ?woodier.? Filter the drink through a cheesecloth to remove stray bits of wood.

'Sweethearting' deals cost retailers billions

Some employees said they were motivated by the potential prospect of receiving better tips.

Voorhees said the freebies translate to $80 billion in losses for the retail industry annually.

?For some firms,? Voorhees said, ?if their employees hook up one out of 20 of their customers with completely free goods and services, this means the profitability of this employee can approach zero.?

Revenue rose 59 percent from a year earlier to $311 million as Zynga grew its user base, ad revenue and the money it makes from games such as "CityVille," "FarmVille and "Zynga Poker." On average, analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $302 million.

Investors may have been hoping for more. Zynga's revenue climbed just 1 percent, compared with the third quarter. In contrast, its revenue grew by double-digit percentages from one quarter to the next for the year's first three quarters.

"Zynga set new records in the year in terms of audience size, revenues and bookings," CEO Mark Pincus said in a statement. "We saw great momentum in mobile and advertising and ended the year with a strong pipeline of new games."

For all of 2011, Zynga lost $404 million, or $1.40 per share, down from earnings of $27.9 million, or 11 cents per share, in 2010. Revenue nearly doubled to $1.14 billion from $597 million. The company ended the year with 2,846 workers, 92 percent more than at the end of 2010.

The company expects adjusted earnings of 24 cents to 28 cents in 2012. Analysts are forecasting earnings of 23 cents per share.

Getting no love from investors on Valentine's Day, Zynga's stock fell 77 cents, or 5.4 percent, to $13.48 after hours. It closed up 93 cents, or nearly 7 percent, at $14.35 before the earnings report.

The shares have ranged from $7.97 to $14.44 since their debut at $10 in December.
